Carol Winograd (she/her)
Board Member
Carol, MD, has been a member of the WDN Action c4 board since it began in 2019 and a WDN member since 2004. She was active in WDN’s Middle East Peace Circle for many years, went on two WDN trips to Israel/Palestine, and participated in the circle’s funding of progressive groups in Israel and Palestine.
Carol deeply appreciates the friendships she has with her WDN sisters, WDN’s progressive politics, collective fundraising, support of grassroots communities, extensive learning opportunities, and WDN’s extraordinary staff.
Carol is a Professor of Medicine and Human Biology Emerita at Stanford Medical School, where she was Director of the Clinical Program in Geriatrics. Her research and clinical work focused on identifying predictors of decline and improving function, especially mobility, in frail hospitalized patients. She got her MD from Boston University, did postgraduate work at Harvard University, and did her residency and fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco.
For many years, Carol has supported groups focusing on justice, equality, and human rights, both in the U.S. and internationally. She has served on the J Street National Board since 2010, was chair of the J Street PAC for the 2020 cycle, and is an ongoing member of its political committee. She is also a New Israel Fund International Council member.
Carol co-founded the Jewish Chaplaincy at Stanford Hospital and served as President of its advisory board for ten years. In 2014 she received J Street’s Tzedek v’Shalom (Justice and Peace) Award. In 2019 she received the Tzedek Award from Bend the Arc.
She and her husband, Terry, have been married for 55 years, live in Stanford, CA, and have two daughters, two sons-in-law, and five grandsons, ranging in age from 5 to 15, all of whom live in the Bay Area. She feels blessed to be able to help resource WDN and underserved communities, advocate for progressive leaders and policies, work with leaders in Congress, and spend quality time with her family.
