More than $7 Million Moved (so far) in 2022!

From abortion access to gun violence, these past few weeks have shown just how much is at stake with the upcoming midterms. WDN Action is steadfast in our commitment to building long-term political power, funding for the present and the future of our country. We prioritize funding for Black, Indigenous, and people of color-led and centered work, with a particular focus on women of color-led organizations.

Over the past two months, we have moved nearly $4 million to groups that are driving electoral organizing, narrative, and digital programs in advance of November, bringing our total grantmaking this year to $7,307,000. And we’re not done yet. We’re prioritizing early resources for frontline organizing in states that will have a decisive electoral impact this fall—from Nevada to Pennsylvania—and we’re investing in important infrastructure that will bolster progressive movements beyond elections. Read on for more about our latest funding.

Thanks to redistricting, Colorado has a new, competitive congressional district with the highest Latinx population of any district in the state. That’s why we’re investing in growing the capacity of youth-led and women of color-led organizations as they work on long-term power building and co-governance on issues like reproductive justice, climate justice, and immigration.

With Sen. Maggie Hassan up for re-election, New Hampshire is a major battleground for the U.S. Senate. Given how critical the Granite State is in the national political map, we are deepening our investment in groups working to engage and mobilize Black, Latinx and white working class voters to build long-term progressive power.

For several years, Nevada has leaned blue and led on progressive policies including pro-democracy reforms. We’re continuing to resource organizations there to ensure they have the capacity to keep advancing progressive policy wins and hold onto recent political gains.

Texas is ground zero for regressive policies on issues like abortion and voter suppression and is an epicenter for the gun reform debate following the shooting in Uvalde. We’re funding critical organizing in the state to ensure that groups have the resources and capacity to engage in defensive advocacy and activate voters that are most directly impacted by these regressive policies.

Michigan was a battleground state in 2020 and continues to draw national attention as a state facing major anti-voter bills and threats to election administration and certification processes. There remains an incredible amount of organizing and advocacy work to be done, as well as continuing to build the statewide infrastructure for 2024.

In Pennsylvania, organizations continue to push back on the voter suppression narrative in the state. Pennsylvania is also a major battleground with an open Senate and open governor’s race. We are moving grants to three new organizations this month that are leading important electoral programs in the state.

While Democrats have not won major statewide elections in recent cycles, Florida remains an important state for long-term power building in an effort to both defend against extreme attacks on reproductive justice, LGBTQIA rights, and voting rights and work to build progressive political power.

Virginia remains a highly contested state where there truly are no off-election years with major state or federal elections happening every year. We continue to invest in electoral organizing and legislative advocacy in Virginia to begin to build towards 2024 and to build back towards state-level gains.

Arizona is an important state to continue to invest in strong progressive and political infrastructure for several reasons. It has also been a major battleground for most critical federal campaigns including voting rights, climate justice, and immigrant justice, and it has a competitive U.S. Senate race. The state has also been a hotspot for anti-voter policies and voter suppression at the state level, which is why we continue to invest in groups leading on these issues. In addition to early grants this year to LUCHA, Our Voice Our Vote, and Rural AZ Action, our most recent funding includes AZ Poder.

We’re also moving funds to several national and multi-state organizations that provide important capacity and development to state-based partners and movement leaders. And in light of last week’s Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, we are funding a rapid-response grant for Ultraviolet Action.
